Gold and gems

Dahlonega Gold Jewelry, Gems and the Gold Behind Them

The short answer

For Dahlonega gold jewelry, start with The Gold Shop on Public Square South, which the downtown directory lists for Dahlonega gold and custom work. Studio Jewelers on Public Square North sells fine and estate jewelry, and Crisson Gold Mine runs a rock and jewelry shop out of town. The Gold Museum in the 1836 courthouse tells the story behind the gold.

For Dahlonega gold jewelry, three shops we could confirm on October 19, 2026 deal in gold, jewelry or gems: two jewelers on the Public Square and the rock and jewelry shop at Crisson Gold Mine, a drive out of downtown. Below is what each says it does, whose hours are confirmed, and the gold history you can see for yourself at the Gold Museum in the middle of the Square.

The Gold Shop: Dahlonega gold on Public Square South

The DDA directory listing for The Gold Shop, at 34-A Public Square South, says it specializes in Dahlonega gold and also does custom work and jewelry cleaning and repair. That makes it the downtown shop to ask first about Dahlonega gold. It has no working website or social page, so everything here comes from the DDA and Visitors Bureau directories. The DDA lists Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday closed. Those hours are not confirmed by the shop, so call (706) 864-7227 before a special trip.

Studio Jewelers: fine and estate jewelry

Studio Jewelers is at 78 Public Square North. Its own site is live and shows fine and estate jewelry: rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and pendants, pearls and crosses. It describes its estate pieces as selected and restored for resale.

Studio Jewelers offers jewelry appraisals and gem evaluations in the store by appointment, through an affiliate valuation firm. (Studio Jewelers, checked Oct 19, 2026)

Its Facebook page says it closed its social media in January 2020, so a quiet Facebook page is not a sign it has closed. Its site does not publish hours; the DDA directory lists 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, which we could not confirm with the shop. Call (706) 864-4234 ahead, and book ahead for an appraisal.

Crisson Gold Mine: rocks, minerals and Dahlonega gold jewelry

Crisson Gold Mine, established in 1969, is at 2736 Morrison Moore Parkway East, outside downtown; its site does not say how far. It describes its shop as the largest rock and mineral shop in North Georgia, alongside a gift shop and jewelry store, and its own pages list custom Dahlonega gold jewelry, high grade ore and mining equipment. You can also pan for gold and mine for gems there. Its own hours: open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine, and open on all major holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Other places with jewelry or stones

  • Dahlonega General Store, 24 Public Square South: its own list of stock includes stones and gems.
  • No. 3 Vintage, 106 Public Square North: listed by the DDA for handmade art and jewelry among its vintage goods.
  • Reclaimed Rose, North Grove Street: jewelry and accessories among its antiques.
  • Cranberry Corners, 44 North Park Street: jewelry is on its own list of gifts.
  • The Glassblowing Shop, 10 South Chestatee Street: glass pendants, made in the shop.

The gold behind the jewelry

The Dahlonega DDA dates the discovery of gold in present-day Lumpkin County to 1828, which set off one of the first major gold rushes in the nation. The Visitors Bureau dates the gold rush to 1829; both are on record. Dahlonega was incorporated on December 21, 1833.

A U.S. Branch Mint opened in Dahlonega in 1838 and coined more than $6 million in gold before closing in 1861. (Georgia State Parks, checked Oct 19, 2026)

After the Civil War the abandoned Mint property was given to the state for education, and North Georgia Agricultural College opened there in 1873. Today UNG says Price Memorial Hall, with its gold-covered bell tower, stands where the Mint once stood, a short walk west of the Square.

See the gold at the Gold Museum

The Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site fills the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse, one of the oldest courthouse buildings in Georgia, at 1 Public Square. Georgia State Parks says its exhibits include a complete set of Dahlonega Mint coins, a nugget weighing more than five ounces and a hydraulic cannon once used to blast soil from mountainsides, plus a film and its own gift shop.

The Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site is open Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. (Georgia State Parks, checked Oct 19, 2026)

Admission, as Georgia State Parks lists it: adults $10.00, seniors $7.50, youth 6 to 17 $7.00, and children 6 and under $3.50. There is no elevator in the courthouse, so some second-floor exhibits are not wheelchair accessible. Phone 706-864-2257.

A gold-themed loop

Start inside the Gold Museum, then cross to The Gold Shop on the south side of the Square and Studio Jewelers on the north side. Walk west to see Price Memorial Hall’s gold steeple, and save Crisson Gold Mine for the drive out.
