Living near downtown Dahlonega turns the Public Square from a day trip into part of the week: a Saturday at the farmers market, a coffee at the General Store, an evening concert in Hancock Park. Here is what that looks like for someone who likes to shop, from public sources, checked Oct 19, 2026. There are no prices or market numbers on this page; those belong in a conversation about a specific home.

A small city with a college

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Dahlonega’s population at 7,918 as of July 1, 2025, and Lumpkin County’s at 36,178 (U.S. Census Bureau). The University of North Georgia sits a short walk west of the Square. Its Price Memorial Hall, with the gold-covered bell tower, stands where the U.S. Mint once stood, and North Georgia Agricultural College opened on the old Mint property in 1873 (UNG).

The Square’s history is the shopping district

Dahlonega was incorporated on December 21, 1833, after gold was discovered in present-day Lumpkin County in 1828 (Dahlonega DDA). A U.S. Branch Mint opened in 1838 and coined more than $6 million in gold before closing in 1861 (Georgia State Parks). The 1836 courthouse in the middle of the Square is now the Gold Museum. The National Register record for the Dahlonega Commercial Historic District, covering Chestatee, Park and Main streets, is dated April 7, 1983 (National Park Service), and Dahlonega won a 2016 Great American Main Street Award (Dahlonega DDA).

Some shops live in that history. Cranberry Corners is in the Woodsmen of the World building at 44 North Park Street, which was originally the Square’s post office (Cranberry Corners). Local Pup is in the John H. Moore and Son Building, built in the 1800s as a bank; the old gold vault is still there (Local Pup).

A week near the Square

  • Weekdays: of the 19 shops that publish exact hours, 17 are open on Mondays. The General Store sells coffee for a nickel a cup and roasts peanuts daily (Dahlonega General Store).
  • Saturdays, May to October: the farmers market in Hancock Park, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 2026. The park also has an all-abilities playground.
  • First Fridays, May to October: concerts in Hancock Park, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • The big weekends: Bear on the Square in April, Gold Rush Days on the third full weekend in October, and the Christmas season from the day after Thanksgiving. See the shopping calendar.

Some of the Square’s best moments are free. The Visitors Bureau lists Saturday-afternoon Appalachian Jams in front of the Gold Museum, and Bears Around the Square is a self-guided walk to 10 small bronze bears, each standing for a figure from Dahlonega’s past (Dahlonega DDA).

Festival weekends fill the Square. On Bear on the Square weekend much of the street parking is blocked, and the UNG deck is the organizers’ recommendation. Our parking page covers the everyday rules.
