If you want Dahlonega gold to take home, there are three places to look: two jewelers on the Public Square and the shop at Crisson Gold Mine, a short drive out of town. Here is what each one says it does, and how to see the real thing, from Mint coins to a five-ounce nugget, at the Gold Museum before you buy.
Why gold, and why here
Gold was found in 1828 in what is now Lumpkin County, setting off one of the first major gold rushes in the nation, per the Dahlonega DDA. The Visitors Bureau dates the rush itself to 1829. The rush was big enough that a U.S. Branch Mint opened here in 1838 and coined more than $6 million in gold before closing in 1861, per Georgia State Parks. The Mint stood where the University of North Georgia’s Price Memorial Hall stands now, with its gold-covered bell tower, per UNG. After the Civil War the abandoned Mint property was given to Georgia for education, and North Georgia Agricultural College opened there in 1873. Price Memorial Hall is a short walk west of the Square, and its gold steeple is the easiest piece of Dahlonega gold to see from the street.
The jewelers on the Square
Studio Jewelers, 78 Public Square North
Studio Jewelers sells fine and estate jewelry: rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, pearls and crosses, and estate pieces “carefully selected and restored for its next chapter.” It also offers jewelry appraisals and gem evaluations in the store by appointment, through an affiliate valuation firm, per its About page. Its own site does not publish hours; the DDA directory lists 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, which the shop has not confirmed. Call (706) 864-4234, and book ahead if you want an appraisal.
The Gold Shop, 34-A Public Square South
The DDA directory lists The Gold Shop for Dahlonega gold, custom work, and jewelry cleaning and repair, and the Visitors Bureau lists it at the same address. It has no working website, so everything we know comes from those two directories. The DDA lists it closed on Sunday. Call (706) 864-7227 before you go.

Crisson Gold Mine: the rock shop and jewelry store
Crisson Gold Mine was established in 1969 and is out of downtown, at 2736 Morrison Moore Parkway East (its site does not say how far). It describes its shop as the largest rock and mineral shop in North Georgia, next to a gift shop and jewelry store, and sells custom Dahlonega gold jewelry, high grade ore and mining equipment. It also offers gold panning and gem mining. It lists 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, rain or shine, and is open all major holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
If you want gold you found yourself, this is the one of the three where you can pan for it.
Before you buy
We do not list prices; ask in the shop. Lumpkin County’s sales tax rate, including Dahlonega, is 8%, per the Georgia Department of Revenue chart effective October 1, 2026. If the piece is estate or vintage and you want an independent view, Studio Jewelers’ appraisals are by appointment, so book before your trip rather than on the day.
See it first at the Gold Museum
The Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site sits in the middle of the Square in the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse, one of the oldest courthouse buildings in Georgia. Its exhibits include a complete set of Dahlonega Mint coins and a nugget weighing more than five ounces, plus a film and its own gift shop.
The Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site is open Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. (Georgia State Parks, checked Oct 19, 2026)
Admission, per Georgia State Parks: $10.00 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, $7.00 for youth 6 to 17, and $3.50 for children 6 and under. The address is 1 Public Square, phone 706-864-2257. One access note: there is no elevator in the courthouse, so some second-floor exhibits are not wheelchair accessible.
Leashed pets are allowed on the historic site’s trails but not inside its buildings, so plan who waits outside if the dog comes along.
The museum is a good first stop. Seeing the coins and the nugget before you shop makes the jewelers’ cases easier to read.
Other gold-flavored things to take home
- Dahlonega Nuggets from the Fudge Factory are pecans in homemade caramel dipped in chocolate, per the Fudge Factory. Not gold, but the most local edible version.
- Stones and gems are on the Dahlonega General Store’s list, alongside its nickel coffee, per its own site.
- The old gold vault is still inside the John H. Moore and Son Building on the Square, built in the 1800s as a bank and now home to Local Pup, per Local Pup.
- Handmade jewelry is on No. 3 Vintage’s DDA listing, and Reclaimed Rose lists jewelry among its vintage finds.
Gold on the calendar
The town’s gold festival, Gold Rush Days, is held the third full weekend in October, per the Visitors Bureau. The 2026 festival was October 17 and 18; the 2027 date is not yet published.
A gold morning, in order
Start at the Gold Museum when it opens (9 a.m. Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. Sunday). Then walk the Square: Studio Jewelers on the north side and The Gold Shop on the south side. If you want to pan, save Crisson for the afternoon; it is a drive. Parking on and around the Square is free; see our parking guide.
For every jeweler and gem shop we could confirm, with cards and hours as published, see our gold jewelry and gems guide. For gift ideas by person, try the Gift Finder.
