Dahlonega parking for shoppers: free spaces, all-day lots and the UNG deck

The short answer

Dahlonega parking around the Public Square is free. The Shop and Dine spaces have a 3-hour limit enforced 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, all-day Park and Stay spaces are in the North Park Street and Warwick Street lots, and UNG's deck is free to the public on weeknights and weekends. Checked Oct 19, 2026.

Parking for a Dahlonega shopping trip is free on and around the Public Square. The rules that matter are a 3-hour limit on the prime spaces on weekdays, two lots for all-day parking, and a university deck that opens to the public on weeknights and weekends. Here is each one, checked Oct 19, 2026.

  • Parking on and around the Public Square is free; the downtown authority counts about 300 free spaces around the Square plus three free lots with 140 spaces. Dahlonega DDA / Main Street
  • The prime 'Shop & Dine' spaces around the Public Square and the Choice Street lot are 3-hour spaces, enforced 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Visitors Bureau
  • For all-day or multi-day parking, the Park & Stay spaces are in the North Park Street lot and the Warwick Street lot. Visitors Bureau
  • The University of North Georgia's shady parking deck (entrance next to the Smith House, 84 S. Chestatee St.) is free to the public from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Monday to Thursday and from Friday 5:30 p.m. to Monday 7:30 a.m. Dahlonega DDA / Main Street
  • There is a Level 2 EV charging port in the Choice Street public parking lot behind the Holiday Inn Express, a short walk from downtown. City of Dahlonega

On the Square

The downtown authority counts about 300 free spaces on and around the Public Square, plus three free lots with 140 spaces (Dahlonega DDA; its parking page was last edited in 2022). The city’s map shows easy parking along both sides of Main Street around the Gold Museum (City of Dahlonega).

The prime “Shop & Dine” spaces around the Square and the Choice Street lot are 3-hour spaces. The city enforces the limit 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday (Visitors Bureau). On weekends and weekday evenings, the 3-hour limit is not enforced.

All-day parking

For all-day or multi-day parking, the Visitors Bureau points to the Park & Stay spaces in the North Park Street lot and the Warwick Street lot. The city calls the Warwick Street lots ample all-day parking, one block from the Gold Museum. The sources describe the free lots a little differently: the DDA’s 2022 page counts three lots, while the Visitors Bureau names the North Park Street and Warwick Street lots for Park & Stay. Both say free.

The UNG deck

The University of North Georgia’s deck, with its entrance next to the Smith House at 84 South Chestatee Street, is free to the public from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Monday to Thursday, and from Friday 5:30 p.m. to Monday 7:30 a.m. The city confirms that UNG, as a community partner, allows public parking in the deck and select lots on weeknights and weekends. On a weekday morning, park on the Square or in a city lot instead.

EV charging

There is a Level 2 EV charging port in the Choice Street public lot behind the Holiday Inn Express, a short walk from downtown (City of Dahlonega).

Accessible and loading spaces

The city’s parking map marks accessible spaces at Warwick Street, West Main Street, North Park Street, East Main Street, the Choice Avenue EV lot and around the Gold Museum on both sides of the Square. Short 15-minute loading spaces are marked on North Park Street, East Main Street and around the Gold Museum. They are handy for loading a big purchase.

The parking meters

As of the city’s October 2025 parking study, the only paid parking downtown was 29 metered spaces on North and South Meaders Street and Maple Street, more than 300 feet from the Square, where prime on-street parking stayed free (City of Dahlonega). At a December 2025 workshop, city staff recommended removing those meters because of the cost of maintenance. We found no 2026 council action removing them or adopting paid parking, so their status in 2026 is not confirmed. If you park on Meaders or Maple, check the meter.

Paid parking has been studied but not adopted for the Square: at a December 2025 workshop the study listed fee parking among its recommendations, while city staff recommended removing the existing meters because of maintenance cost; we found no 2026 council vote changing the rules. (City of Dahlonega, checked Oct 19, 2026)

Buses, RVs and a shuttle

In June 2026 the city attorney announced a forthcoming Bus Parking Ordinance (City of Dahlonega). We found no published bus or RV parking rule for downtown yet, so call the Visitor Center before you bring a large vehicle. At the same meeting a downtown shuttle and employee-parking program was proposed; the mayor asked for a request for proposals, and no council action was taken.

Festival days

On Bear on the Square weekend, much of the street parking is blocked, and the organizers recommend UNG’s deck off West Main Street or its surface lot off South Chestatee (Bear on the Square). For other festivals, check the organizer’s page before you go.
